At Sprain Brook Company we use traditional building methods and renewable hardwoods for our barns, using less energy and creating less waste.

Along with being resourceful, we also support local businesses and craftsmen, like our local lumber mill and blacksmith.

1. We use local lumber, a renewable resource, from area mills, supporting the local economy and also, reducing transportation costs and energy usage.

2. The lumber for a timber frame barn is traditionally air dried, not kiln dried. This saves on energy and pollution.

3. Even though the barns are historical in style, they are energy efficient, and can be incorporated with geothermal, solar or radiant heating systems.

4. High efficiency structural insulated panels can be used in the construction. This makes the building energy efficient and also efficient in that the siding and sheetrock can go directly onto the panels without extra preparation or materials.

5. Location and positioning of the barn is important for energy efficiency. Southern light is traditionally used for getting the most from the sun in the winter.
